My Debt Had Me Down

Have you ever sat and thought about how much money you owe?  Just really added everything up and looked at it?  HONEY!!  I undertook this task years back and I was … depressed.  Thinking that a girl can run up on me at anytime and demand payment from me. 😐 That was not sitting well with me.  And let me give you some background on why I went down this road in the first place.  As I have mentioned in Part 1 and Part 2, I was broke.  And broke includes a long list of life chaos.  I was barely getting by, and in turn, I had little to no funding for debt repayments.  When you need to a roof and food, student loan and credit card debt do not get much attention.  Well at least not the attention they require.  In other words, debt was my side piece, but eating and shelter was my main squeeze if you will.

As you get older, you realize you need to stop playing games, and get your financial house in order.  So I first focused o making sure my main was taken care of.  Rent and utilities were paid in full, on time, every month.  I made sure I did not go hungry, but I was not “eating good” by any means.  It was tuna, noodles, pasta, rice, frozen veggies and on sale chicken.  (Random Fact:  I am in a much better financial place, but I still tend to eat like this to this day.)  My sodium intake was high, but that is the least of your worries when you are broke.

I was attempting to restructure my financial life and I had to start by conquering the basics.  Food, Shelter and Utilities.  Once I was able to pay my basic bills with no issue, I started looking at my debt repayments.  I was paying the minimum required payments on all of my obligations.  However, at the rate I was going, I was on track to be in debt for the rest of my adult life.  That vexed my spirit.  Who wants to owe a girl for the rest of their lives?  Not me.  I am
